Five on Friday

impromptu trip to the zoo

It's been another busy summer week and we are looking forward to our final quiet weekend at home. We're hosting Hayden's birthday party next weekend and packing and getting ready for our trip to CA. Here's what has been going on in our life this week:

1. Naked Cake! (nothing inappropriate!) For Charlotte's baptism, I wanted to make her a "naked" cake (with no frosting on the sides) and flowers on top; a la Pinterest. I love the way it turned out- though it was definitely time-intensive.

2. On Monday we celebrated Nick's birthday! We had a little dinner at home and served a homemade ice cream cake that was made with lots of love (and sugar!)

3. I made grilled romaine lettuce for the first time because I overbought at Costco last week. Charlotte is in a non-vegetable phase but the other three of us really enjoyed it! All you do is slice heads of romaine in half lengthwise, brush with olive oil and grill for about 2 - 3 minutes per side. After taking it off the grill, I squeezed fresh lemon juice, salt and pepper, and a little parmesan cheese on top.

4. I bought this pack of 100 ponytail holders for Charlotte on Amazon a few months ago and they are the best. I've bought packs of 5 at various stores but the price for this many ponytail holders can't be beaten. We both use them and they don't get stuck in her curls the way other ponytail holders do.

5. My brother was here this week and it was so so nice to spend time one-on-one (plus 2 kids!) with him. He's such a good uncle and never tired of getting on the floor and playing with the kids.
