banana bread oatmeal

We are a breakfast-loving group over here and I'm always looking for new foods to try out with my kids so that we don't fall into the same rut each day. They weren't really fans of oatmeal until recently. If you love banana bread, this oatmeal tastes exactly like it, but you know, healthier.

Ingredients
  • 1 very ripe banana
  • 1 cup of milk (your choice- almond, soy, we use whole milk)
  •  1/2 tsp vanilla
  • oats of your choice (we use 5 minute oats from Trader Joe's)
  • almonds/pecans/nuts of your choice

Process
  • Break the banana up in chunks and throw in the blender with the whole milk and vanilla. Blend until fairly smooth
  • Pour mixture into pot and bring to a boil.
  • Add oats and cook according to package.
  • Garnish with your favorite chopped nuts of choice.

Super simple, really filling and delicious without any added sugar! We've been rotating
this through the breakfast menu at least once a week.

4th of July Everything

I'll be honest, up until Saturday, I didn't even realize the fourth was next week! I love all holidays, and this one is especially fun. I think we are at the age with Hayden where he'll appreciate getting to stay up late and watch fireworks. Our pool is having a party on the third and our town is doing fireworks on the third as well, so it will be one long, festive weekend!
I thought I would share a few patriotic ideas/ items that I've found around the internet this weekend.

These confetti launchers are too cute and I know Hayden would love to create one or two! Painting is always a favorite for both my kids and these firework paintings (with straws and TP rolls) are fun and easy.

If I'm feeling ambitious, this pie is adorable- I happen to have star cookie cutters in multiple sizes; perhaps I've attempted this before?! Both kids would love these star wands and bonus points for getting a little extra fruit in them. And of course, who doesn't love a good popsicle?!

Because swimming and being outside are in our plans for the holiday weekend, I've included a couple casual items that would be so cute on my babies and of course some fun swimwear!

friday, friyay

This first official week of summer has been a welcome one- our pool finally opened for weekdays, we've been having popsicles, ice cream, or milkshakes daily, and Nick and I are steadily making our way through Mad Men (late to the game...). The kids and I have been spending as much time as possible outside: eating, drawing with chalk, swinging, and playing with water.

If you have a water table, I HIGHLY recommend this activity. Seriously, my kids were engaged for almost an hour. Our water table has lived outside in the elements and was dirty and gross, so I filled it with water and dish soap and gave them a sponge. They loved splashing in the soapy water, which eventually evolved into a car wash. And soap + water; definitely counts as a bath, right?!

Every 4 - 6 months, I do a big order from Old Navy/ Gap for my kids clothes. (Well Hayden has been longer than that because he's been in a 2T for over a year.) I just got all Charlotte's spring/summer clothes since she's growing a bit and we don't have many warm weather options for our girl. They have so many cute things out right now and I bought 12-18 month clothes so everything can be worn for awhile (who knows, maybe even next year!) Lots of floral prints. Old Nay/Gap have sales every single day online so I usually leave things in my bag and see when the best sale comes up (typically 40% off) and then hit purchase. Here are a couple of my favorites from our purchases:

If you need a quick and easy dinner recipe, I would definitely recommend this one. My kids loved it (so did I... I think Nick wanted to know where the meat was, ha). It was almost as easy as making a box of Annie's mac and cheese but healthier and included some greens!

back at it

It's been a couple months since I wrote anything on the blog, and to be honest, I wasn't sure I wanted to continue with it. While I've loved sharing snippets of our life, the kids, and our house over the years, taking a step back made me reevaluate if I really want to keep going. I do love having these posts to revisit and see what my kids were like at certain stages and remember this time period, for I've been told it goes by too quickly.
The thing is, this blog is generally a happy snapshot, a light place and our life isn't exactly like that right now. We, of course, have our happy moments and we have fun, but we are certainly grieving. We have been for 2 months now;  every day, I carry around this heavy sadness in my heart that never really leaves.  We are deeply missing a wonderful man, who left the world too soon.
