Hayden's Yellow Party

We celebrated Hayden's big day this past Saturday with a fun yellow party. A few months ago, Hayden's favorite color was yellow and everything was yellow all the time. He has since moved on to red (or handsome red as he sometimes calls it) but we were sticking with the yellow theme for the party. After the craziness of last year's pancake bash, we decided to do a simpler party with less food prep, less decorations, and less people. It ended up being the perfect party for our little man.
I picked up/made a few of his favorite foods for the occasion: hummus, cheese and crackers, and macaroni and cheese. Since the party was at 10 am, we didn't have to serve a full meal. Hayden and I baked his birthday cupcakes together and my sister helped frost them.
As for decorations, I bought a few packs of tissue paper and made a tassel garland, and fun dot garland. I also made a table runner out of wrapping paper. Yellow crepe paper and balloons finished off the easy decorations.
We had a few kids at this party so I made some favor bags and stuffed them with fruit snacks, bubbles, play dough and sun glasses.
Hayden and his buddies enjoyed swinging outside, playing with blocks and coloring, and also enjoying some of his new toys.
It was such a fun day and I am so grateful to everyone for coming out to celebrate with us. Also a HUGE thank you to my sister, Emily who showed up early on Saturday morning (coffee in hand!) and helped pull together the last minute details of the party (plus she took all the pictures for the day!)

Happy Birthday, Baby

Happy Birthday to my big two year old boy! I can't believe it's already been two years since I first held you in my arms. You are growing into such a sweet, gentle little person with so much love. You shower us daily with hugs and cuddles and "I love you"s. You are happiest in Mommy or Daddy's arms reading a book. You have such a large vocabulary and you are always amazing us with your words and phrases. Your best buddy currently is Elephant, who sleeps with you each night and often tags along for daytime adventures. Elephant gets lots of hugs and kisses, even some of your lunch! And of course, plenty of "I love Elephant so so much." You love to help Momma cook; you love to count; and you love trains. You are a pretty great listener for your age, a not-so-great eater (it's okay- Daddy still isn't!) , and an easy-going little guy.  You have the sweetest belly laugh and I'm so lucky to get share each new day with you. Happy, happy birthday to my favorite little boy- I'm so grateful to be your Momma.

2 year old favorites

2 year old favorites

Now that Hayden is just about 2, we are finding that his tastes are changing and his attention span is getting longer. Here are a few of our current favorites at this age:

1. Easy Reader Books: Hayden enjoys longer books than the usual board book variety and loves to sit with me in his teepee with a big pile of books. Because some picture books tend to be kind of long for the average 2-year-old, we've found that easy reader books are great for this age. There are lots of pages and a story to follow but we can turn the pages quickly and Hayden likes to memorize the phrases on some of the pages. Some that are in heavy rotation here include: The Berenstain Bears and the Missing Dinosaur Bone, Go Dog Go!, and Are You My Mother?

2. Musty, Grow-Up! Seat. A few months ago, it became evident that Hayden was over his highchair/tray combo. He liked to sit at the table with us so we bought this booster seat so that he could reach the table. He loves having his own little spot and I like the modern design and easy-to-clean feature of this seat.

3. Crayola Sidewalk Chalk. We love this particular box of chalk (okay maybe me more than him!). It has tons of pretty colors just like a box of Crayola Crayons and it's only $4.99. Plus the chalk has angled tops for easier drawing. Chalk can keep us entertained for at least an hour on a sunny day.

4. Honest Sunscreen. We've been buying this nonstop this summer. Its safe from all the scary ingredients that can be found in other sunscreens and it doesn't have a strong smell. For all our hours at the park, beach, pools, etc. neither of us has gotten even a little bit of a burn.

5. See Kai Run Sandals. We got these at the beginning of the summer and Hayden has worn them almost everyday. They are made of good quality leather and have withstood water, heat, and lots of dirt and sand. They are cute and can be worn with dressier outfits or play clothes. Plus they run a little wide (according the the saleslady) so it's easy to get them on and off in a hurry.

6. Brio Trains. We pull out the train set and all the tracks nearly everyday. Hayden has gotten pretty good at connecting the tracks and trains. He still gets frustrated that he can't do it all by himself but trains are definitely a favorite toy in our house.
