Hayden's Surgery

Tuesday morning we took Hayden in for surgery on his foot to remove a piece of glass that he stepped on back in May. Due to scheduling conflicts with the surgery center and a lengthy cold on Hayden's part, we were rescheduled 3 times and finally made it to the surgery, almost a month later than planned.
We got there at 7:45 and were lucky that Hayden was in a good mood and not asking for anything to eat or drink since he wasn't allowed anything before surgery. He found a red fire truck in the waiting room and that kept him occupied for the better part of an hour and a half before the surgery. He refused to wear a hospital bracelet or gown so ended up going back to surgery in just his diaper.
Nick and I were able to go back with him while they were administering the anesthesia. The anesthesiologist told us that he could administer it really quickly if Hayden was fighting the mask or slowly if he was doing okay with it. Hayden was fine with the mask and we sang 2.5 rounds of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star before he was out. My voice caught a few times and I was so close to tears watching him go under. After he was out, they led us to the waiting room where my mother-in-law, Susie, kept us company and reassured us for the hour or so before the doctor came out. As soon as we were in the waiting room, I promptly burst into tears (pregnancy hormones/feeling so scared about everything).
Everything went really well with the surgery and they were able to get the few small shards in his foot and clean out any dirt. They also cast his foot so that he could get around on it while it was healing this week.
When he was starting to wake up in the recovery room we went back and again my heart broke seeing him strapped down in the bed with his IV and breathing mask. He was crying a lot and really disoriented. The nurse was really great and got him out of bed so I could hold him while he woke up. We sang lots of songs and talked softly while he slowly came around. He ended up having some residual mucus in his lungs from his previous cold so they wanted to monitor his oxygen for a little while longer. Hayden kept trying to get the IV out of his arm and wasn't too happy when he saw his cast either.
We got the all clear to go home so  Susie and I took Mr. H and Nick headed off to work. At home, Hayden was still very groggy and quiet so we sat on the couch and let him watch a little Mickey and after about 30 minutes he started perking up, eating and drinking a little and trying to walk around on his cast.
Seeing him in his little red cast is the saddest/cutest thing ever and I'm glad it's only for a week. He was such a trooper. His granny was such a big help and everyone at the surgery center was really great too. I'm so lucky that our first "major" medical incident with him wasn't really major at all. We're spending the rest of the week at home recovering and staying dry and looking forward to the big birthday party this weekend!

around here lately...

Life has been trucking right along and I can't believe that July is almost over. This summer feels simultaneously long and like it's rushing by. Anyway, some quick updates...
Last week started birthday month at our house with Nick's 29th birthday. We had a small get together for him on Saturday night complete with homemade s'mores cupcakes- a true labor of love!
Hayden is finally scheduled to have his foot surgery tomorrow and although it's a quick procedure, we're still nervous about the whole process, especially the anesthesia. He caught a cold earlier this month which delay the surgery 3 times so we're glad to finally get it over with and start the recovery process. So, prayers please for our little guy tomorrow morning!
We tried to start potty-training for a quick weekend with some mixed results. I think we'll give it another go in the Fall when we are done with all our vacations and summer-busyness.
My youngest brother moved to Virginia for school/work last week and we had one last family photo of the 8 (and a half) of us until we see him again at Christmas.
Hayden's birthday is next on the docket and we are having his party this coming Saturday. I'm taking a much more relaxed approach to this year's party planning (compared to last year!) but I'm still excited for the big day!
Finally, I am 15 weeks pregnant with Little One #2 which seems crazy. This pregnancy feels like it's flying by and I'm hoping to do more regular updates like I did with Hayden.
Anyway, that's our life in a nutshell!

6 years

Today is our 6 year anniversary and I can't believe how fast these years have gone (and the 11 since we've known each other!).  Our life is about to get a little more crazy, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I love this life we are building together and thinking about all the possibilities the future holds.  I love being in love with my best friend.

our 4th of july

We had a great holiday weekend. We went up to Lake Tahoe with my family and it was so relaxing. We actually didn't see any fireworks or do anything too terribly patriotic, but it was fun regardless.
We went to the beach everyday and were pleasantly surprised about how much Hayden loved the water (even the  always chilly lake water!).  He's iffy about pools so we weren't sure what to expect. We literally had to bribe him out of the water with snacks when he started shivering. He would sit wrapped in a towel eating snack for about 20 minutes before he was toddling back down to the water for more splashing.
It was so nice to have a family vacation with everyone- we are going back to Tahoe again next month but my youngest brother is moving to VA to start a new job and grad school so we won't be complete that time around.
Anyway, it was such a great time, I'm trying to convince my parents that they should rent a place up there every 4th of July ;)

Baby #2 Details

Thanks for everyone's sweet well-wishes on our big news yesterday! I've been bursting to tell our secret and am so glad it's finally out of the bag! Here's some more info on Baby #2:
I'm due January 16th, 2015 so I'm 12 and a half weeks along. We've known since May 20th- so for about 7 weeks. While this baby wasn't really a surprise, per se, we were surprised to find that I got pregnant so quickly. I felt sick one morning and drove to Target to get a pregnancy test and got a positive. Nick had been traveling for work and was getting home late that night so I was waiting on pins and needles all day to tell him. I wrapped up the test in a box and told him I had an early Father's Day gift for him. He didn't suspect at all!  We told our families around 9 weeks and no one was too surprised by the news - everyone suspected Baby #2 was on it's way sometime in the next year.
We are excited for a winter baby- after having a baby in August, I'm looking forward to the cooler weather when I'm super pregnant  (although this is California, so you never know...)! I think that this pregnancy will go by more quickly since there's so much to look forward to with the fall and the holidays, etc.  Oh yes, and chasing around a toddler every day! ;)
The kids will be almost exactly 2.5 years apart which feels like a really good age difference.  I have no intuition about whether or not we are having a boy or girl, but we definitely plan to find out! I think having a girl would be fun after having a boy, but at the same time, I would love to have a brother and built in BFF for Hayden- so really we'll be so excited for whatever this little one is.
So far, this pregnancy is a bit different than the first one. Last time, I had morning sickness right at 5 weeks and I got sick every morning at 4:30 am and feel okay by about 11 am.  Also, like someone with a hangover, greasy food (like burgers) helped ease my stomach. This time around, the morning sickness showed up a little later and has been more inconsistent. I have days where I feel mostly fine, and then days where I'm sick ALL.DAY.LONG.  Also, I've been throwing up much less this time around- but feeling more nauseous... I don't even know! Most meat (especially burgers!) makes me queasy. Mostly I've been surviving on fruit, hummus, and carbs. Also, last time I just stopped working out completely when I got pregnant (blame it on the lack of energy and the morning sickness). This time, I've been trying to keep up with my running, taking yoga classes, and doing a lot more walking. It seems that staying active is helping me feel less run down. Although I won't lie and say that I haven't been taking advantage of Hayden's nap times on the days when I feel really exhausted.
Anyway, we are over the moon to become a family of 4 and looking forward to sharing the journey again with you guys!

goodbye june!

Is this summer going by way too fast or what? I can't believe it's already July! In July we get to celebrate our 6 year wedding anniversary and Nick's last year of his 20s. Then in August it's birthday month for Hayden and me. Lots of fun! Anyway, here's a quick look back at some of the little moments of our first month of the summer- mostly just for documentation's sake ;)
Is anyone else's kid obsessed with the dog at Old Navy? Hayden loves it and we always spend a good 10 minutes on either end of our trip petting the dog and talking to it.
June saw plenty of park time! We love the park- especially when Daddy can come with us!
We also had our first solo (non-work) flight without Hayden when we traveled to New York. As much as we love our boy it was sure nice to travel unaccompanied for once!
Apropos of yesterday's post... Sometimes the only way I can sneak in a shower in the morning with Hayden opening and shutting the shower door and throwing all the bottles everywhere...
Strolling together downtown... until he says, "Momma, I hold you?" (aka pick me up!)
Sharing a seat and post-nap yogurt with Mommy.
Playing at the doctor's office. Poor little thing has a piece of glass in the heel of his foot and is probably going to have to have surgery to get it out. We are still waiting for our surgical consultation and praying that it just comes out on it's own.
Bart train selfies on the way home from our favorite Friday nights at the Oakland Museum.
