momma & baby: camo

Camo is a big trend right now. Though I'm not a fan of going overboard with it (#camofail), I like little touches of it here and there. When I saw these leggings at Brickyard Buffalo, I ordered them on the spot. My trendy guy is sporting another BB find, this neon baseball tee.
My flats are from good old Target and I love the combo of sparkly + camo. I've been trying to find a way to work them into basically every outfit lately.

5 on Friday

Halloween is coming! I decided early on to let myself off the hook and not attempt to make Hayden's costume. I very happily purchased it from Amazon a month ago. But last then, I got the idea to "accessorize"his costume a bit... So last night I was up late crafting some rocket boosters and a space shuttle. Three guesses as to what the little man is going to be!

Soup. I have been making soup like it's my job. There's something very fall-y about soup that I love and I really like being able to serve a whole dinner in one dish. Plus - leftovers! I've been a big fan of Real Simple's recipes. So far we've had: this one, this one, this one, as well as a couple of our old favorites.
First haircut. Hayden got his first haircut this week! It was time, but I was still a little sad to see the baby hairdo go. He looks like such a big boy to me now. I've had trouble getting a good picture so far (he's always on the go), but here's a little before and after.

How About WeHave you heard of this site? It's sort of like groupon for dates. You can browse there date book and they have some really fun, out-of-the-box dates that you can book for a discounted rate. For a couple that usually just goes out to eat, this site looked like fun! I may or may not have already booked one date for Nick and I. We figured that since we've successfully kept Hayden alive, well, and happy for over a year, perhaps we should strike a balance and focus on our relationship a little more than we did last year! :)

a sweet deal

I'm so excited! We finally, finally got a dining room table that I love! We've been interested in getting a table for a while, since the round chippy table wasn't really our style. However, our dining area is small and we kept putting off the big purchase. The one we got was a bit of an impulse purchase. A couple of weeks ago, Nick handed me the West Elm Catalog and on front was a picture of their Carroll Dining table, on sale for $466.
We both really liked it and thought it would look nice in our dining room, but we've been spending a lot of money on house upgrades lately and didn't really want to buy a table, even at a good price. Then, Nick reminded me that due to all our home repairs, we had racked up quite a few credit card points. I checked and we had more than enough to cover the cost of the table. So I ordered it on the spot. I expected it to ship out in a few weeks, but I got an e-mail saying it would be delivered in less than week!
We love the new table- though it does feel a bit large for our little family!
I decided that I wanted to have mixed seating for the table. I have 2 wooden chairs that I painted white already (not a matching set) and I decided to hunt around at thrift stores and garage sales to find two more to paint the same shade. For the two ends of the table, I purchased these metal cafe chairs from Overstock.com. I really love the way they look and I think they're pretty comfortable (for metal chairs).
Anyway- that's the story of how we got our table for pretty much free!
There's only one problem...
The light fixture is oddly not centered in the room, or between the windows. So it's super off-center from the table. My father-in-law, Bob the Builder, assures me that it can be moved easily...

Momma & Baby: Pumpkin Crafts

This past week, Hayden and I both did some super easy fall-themed pumpkin crafts to decorate our home.
MOMMA VERSION:
I used painters tape to tape off some designs on a few mini pumpkins from Trader Joe's. Then I used my tube of gold leaf Rub n' Buff and filled in the patterns. Easy-peasy and took me about 15 minutes, tops. The lines aren't perfect, but I love the way they turned out.

The finished product:

BABY VERSION:
For Hayden's pumpkin project, I cut out an outline of a pumpkin from construction paper and placed it on a sheet of clear contact paper (face-up). Then I taped the contact paper to the floor so Hayden couldn't pull it up. I gave him a handful of cut up pieces of tissue paper and let him stick them to the pumpkin.
He really got into the project once we started throwing the tissue paper squares in the air and letting them swirl gently to the ground. (See that happy face?!)
This craft lasted 10 minutes and when he crawled off with tissue paper stuck to his bum, I took another sheet of contact paper and stuck the pumpkin in between the two sheets. Then I cut the pumpkin outline out, added a little stem and string and hung it in our window.
Now we have a pretty  fall-themed sun catcher (you can see it the window on the right in this picture:)

Two fun crafts for your Friday!

and now our whole house is gray... or grey.

Last Thursday and Friday a year-long dream of mine came true and our house was painted! I've loathed the khaki that covered every single wall since before we moved in. However, things had to happen in order around here (windows and important details like that first) and we couldn't paint until now. (Believe me, I was on the phone with the paint company, before the window guys had even left the house.) Anyway, in this post, I discussed the mad rush for a color choice. I wanted a light light grey (gray?... I never know) to make our house feel brighter and more open. Well, I have to say the color achieved just that!
Here's a little refresher of what we had going on circa May 2012:
and today:
 Sooo. Much. Better.
I just love walking into our house and seeing it looking so bright and cheery and so much more modern:
We had our bedroom and bathroom (not pictured) painted in the same color because we are still figuring things out in there and a nice neutral tone seemed like the safest bet. Our room gets a lot of light so the grey in there feels really soothing...
Now you may be asking: Jessica, is every room in your house now painted a shade of grey? Why yes, yes, you are correct.

I think it's safe to say I like the grey! (and also gray)

a new blog

So, I started a new blog... Sorta! I've been feeling a definite shift in the content of the blog since Hayden was born- many more baby-focused, family-focused posts and less of the DIY that we started with. So I wanted to name the blog something that was a little more in line with what it was all about; hence the new name. This won't just be a mommy-blog- I still plan on blogging about our house projects if when we do them, but I think this new title and refresh will help keep it more family-centered. All our old posts from www.reisfelt.com are on this blog too and I hope you decide to keep reading about our little life!
(I mean... obviously you want to keep seeing this little one...)

5 on Friday

Five little updates from this week:
1. The painters already finished most of the downstairs yesterday and it's such a big difference! Sorry for the bad iPhone picture, I'll share much better ones when all the painting is done!
2. This kid cracks me up. Everyday, he's doing something so silly. His new thing is to climb into containers, boxes, pans, trays, anything that will hold his size. Yesterday while I was getting ready, he climbed into a laundry basket in our room and played in there for 15 minutes.

3. We did go the pumpkin patch last Friday and had such a great time. I will write more about that later, but Hayden picked out his pumpkin in the first 2 minutes we were there.
4. New table!! Another update for you- we are finally getting a new table for our dining room and it's being delivered today. Sooo excited!! Also... we basically got it for free ;)  It's this table from West Elm:

5. I'm late on my usual October 1st Halloween decorating (I blame the construction site for the last 3 weeks...) but we're throwing a party this weekend so I'm planning of doing some decorating with H today! I'm pretty sure this is the last year I can do anything spooky around the house for a little while (since I don't want to scare Hayden!) so I've got to live it up!
Halloween 2011

Happy Friday, guys! Hope it's a great weekend!

apple picking

This past weekend, we took Mr. H apple picking, as is the appropriate thing to do on a Fall Weekend. I over-dressed us in fall clothes (given the 80+ degree weather) but we had a great time, nonetheless. We took a scenic drive about an hour and half up the coast and went to an Organic apple farm that specialized not only in apples, but pears, pumpkins, sunflowers currently. We picked 10 pounds of apple (I have high aspirations for applesauce, apple pie, caramel apples and the like). Nick or I would actually pick the apple off the tree and hand it to Hayden to put into the bin. He's super into sorting items and moving things from one space to another, so this was the perfect job for him. Such a fun Fall activity and we're looking forward to the next one on our agenda- the pumpkin patch!
